i did my first real bit of exercise today for the first time in about 6 months. we went and got my bike fixed with high hopes of a nice leisurely ride this afternoon. yeah. i lasted about 10 minutes. will try again tomorrow, for sure.

i finally finished the little mobile i've been working on for Henry. pretty pleased with how it turned out. the lightning bolt was sean's contribution :)

we're starting our bradley classes tonight- pretty excited!

i'm being a proud-pants tonight after having successfully figured out how to attach my bike to the trainer i got.

things that make me laugh out loud, part 1 (unofficially)

touchy-feely. helen keller.

there's a story, and it's from a while ago. but just those two little phrases together send me into fits of laughter and memories.

i miss you guys.

unrelated: i've been posting gobs of new loot in the shop this week. daily, in fact. and there's still more, if you can believe it! more more!

i rode my bike to work every day this week. it's good. it shall continue. only one spot scares me, but i can handle it. and if i can't, well, that's why i wear a helmet.

jeff is home. yay.

i made some bicycle cozies from the felt that leah just sent me (it's so pretty!), and managed to put the saddle basket on all by myself! the front basket didn't fit this bike, so i put it on the other one.

good times.

ballpoint pens not allowed.

i'm making preparations to start biking to work. and i feel like a wuss. when i first started walking in september it was over 90 degrees both on the way there and on the way home, not to mention to >90% humidity pretty much all the time.

now, it's in the mid-80's and i can barely stand it. it's only april! i just keep thinking, "what on earth am i going to do over summer?!? i'll die!"

so. i bought a fancy schmancy super mega bike lock, and i'm on the hunt for a front basket to put on my little orange yet-to-be-named road bike. we even found a couple routes that will keep me off main roads for the most part. gonna test them out this weekend.

it's not like this plan is going to save me from the hellish heat, but it should cut the time down from 45 minutes to about 15. plus, you know, the bike breeze :)

also, i feel like a slug (or caterpillar at most) when i don't get any exercise, and i don't want that.

but i'm still terrified of getting my bike stolen. or getting hit by a car. so it goes.

today is the end of 'roid week :(
it was a good one, though.

p.s. the term "front basket" makes me giggle a lot cause it reminds me of hermes' "front butt" in the new(ish) futurama movie. "kiss my front butt!" it's classic.

weekenders.

we managed to venture out of the apartment for a few hours today and visit a nearby museum, the Menil. it was not terrible. they had many impressive works from many impressive names, though my favorites were a couple polaroids of andy warhol (they were hilarious), and the 3 joseph cornell pieces they had, which i was pleasantly suprised to see.

there were 2 exhibits not quite ready to open, and several satellite buildings on the grounds which we didn't get to because it was pouring rain by that time, but luckily it's free so i'll definitely go back.

mom: no more iodine injections for you!
miki: i'll be thinking about you a lot this week. heal fast! heal fast!

and the most exciting thing of the day: erinroddy.com is finally a real website! this is a day i've been anticipating for over a year. whew!

jeff went to his first houston critical mass last night. this is a nationwide club, sort of, of bicyclists who ride throughout the city in droves and cause as many traffic jams as possible. it sounds as if they accomplished their mission last night.

new rule.

it's taken a few little nudges recently, but i've decided to start walking to work. it's 2 1/2 miles, so it shouldn't be more than a 45 minute walk, i hope. and walking 5 miles a day, i think, could do nothing less than make me feel better. which is something i've been searching for.

the first reason for my decision is that i'll be out of a car for a few days anyway, while it's in the (very reputable, according to car talk...) shop. secondly, i just finished reading emma. those ladies in early 19th century walked freakin everywhere. EVERYDAY. if they can do it in their bustles and petticoats, then so shall i. perhaps, even, with bustles and petticoats.

i gave very little thought to riding my bike to work. it would be much faster, but i see no reason to get my bike stolen like all the others in our parking lot. besides, this way i'll be able to take pictures along the way :)

sticky.

i wish it wasn't so hot out. i'd really like to ride my bike for a bit. i took out some recycling earlier and the 80% humidity (and 90+ degrees) immediately overpowered my prescription deodorant. it's unfortunate.

edit: finally able to take a quick ride this evening. yay!
